by Apple has done it again. And, yes, I’m sure we’ve said that before. But what’s with them constantly taunting us with the newest and best? Those upgrades, the amazing features… yeah, regardless if we have an iPhone 4s, that 5 sure looks great.
And here’s why.
The thinnest, lightest, and fastest iPhone ever is something we’ve all been looking forward to. The new iPhone 5 is just 7.6 millimeters thin, with a newly designed nano-SIM card (44 percent smaller than a micro-SIM), and a unique cellular LTE using a single chip for both voice and data. It has a reversible Lightning connector that is 80 percent smaller than the previous 30-pin connector, an 8 megapixel iSight camera twenty percent smaller, and a new A6 chip is up to 2x faster than the A5 chip… but, you guessed it, 22 percent smaller, as well. And… it’s 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner than iPhone 4S.
Not too bad. Not too bad at all.
The back of iPhone 5 is similar to Apple notebooks, using anodized 6000 series aluminum. Ceramic glass covers the top and bottom of the white and silver models, while pigmented glass is on the glass and slate. It has two high-powered 29MP cameras, made of sapphire crystal (so say goodbye to possible scratches). And the new sweat/water/everything proof Apple EarPods are specially designs for the perfect fit in your ears with the best sound possible.
The larger Retina display boast 326 pixels per inch, with 18 percent more pixels and an 1136-by-640 resolution and brighter colours. The new A6 chip is up to twice as fast compared with the A5 chip with graphics performance twice as fast, too. It works with iOS 6 to be super power efficient and has up to 8 to 10 hours of battery life — a big improvement.
There are some new features with the camera as well; using panorama lets you use one smooth motion you can shoot up to 240 degrees up to 28 megapixels, along with 40 percent faster photo capture, better low-light performance, and improved noise reduction. You can also take advantage of the HD video recording to make 1080p HD video, along with FaceTime video calls. You can also edit photos right away by removing red-eye, cropping, rotating, and making other changes, and share easily and quickly. Even better, you can snap photos while simultaneously shooting 1080p HD video.
Apple has also improved the pile of the other Built-In Apps, with many features that brings them to the caliber of the iPhone 5.
Maps are now vector-based, with detailed graphics and text, and smooth panning, tilt, and rotate. Like your favourite GPS, Maps speaks the directions, so you can stay hands-free and eyes are all the road, but passengers can love the 3D views with signs and arrows, along with traffic alternatives if it gets too busy. It uses real-time traffic conditions, and can alert you to accidents along the way, or traffic that might slow you down.
Siri is smarter than ever before, with more languages under her belt, getting you the details you need, when you need them. Use her in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Cantonese.
One of our favourites is Passbook, which keeps everything organized. And, even better, more and more apps are Passbook-enabled, allowing you to keep receipts, tickets, gift cards… everything altogether. It is time and location based so everything is there the moment you need them, literally.
Find it hard to believe, but folks also use the iPhone as, you know, a phone. Call whoever. Ask Siri to do it. Add another caller… it’s all seamless with better clarity, a reduction of background noise, and even an automatic reply via text message if you’re busy and need to miss a call. And FaceTime and video calls are better than ever.
Like the phone, Email is also a key ingredient to the love of the iPhone, and Mail works great with the larger display that lets you see more, in general, and more detail, too. You can quickly open and send attachments, organize and keep track, use VIP contacts (just like on your Mac), and compose a message with the sound of your voice.
When you need to surf the net, you’ll love the bigger and clearer screen. The A6 chip makes it super fast, and Reader allows you to read articles for offline viewing. iCloud Tabs shows the web pages you have open on all your devices, so leaving your Mac at home has never been easier.
Other Apps are just as great as they once were, but faster, smarter, and seamless with iCloud. You can listen to your favorite songs with ease, use AirPlay from anywhere you are, share photos with a quick tap, and play games with friends through the Game Center. The Calendar keeps your life in check, and looks a lot better with a work week’s worth view of activities, making it much easier to navigate than previous versions.Newsstand is also now available, and Notes loves using Dictation. Most of the other apps, such as Weather and Stocks, are consistent with previous versions.
The new iPhone 5 is available in four colours: Black, Silver, Slate, and White. Three sizes are available: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, with prices ranging from $199 to $399.
