How to Remove Items from the Dock in Mountain Lion

Something appears to have changed since I upgraded to the latest version of OS X. When I first purchased my Mac with Snow Leopard, I could easily drag apps from the Dock to have them disappear in a puff of smoke. Since upgrading, I cannot seem to do this, nor can I remove items from the Finder sidebar. What am I doing wrong?

Starting in Lion, Apple implemented a slight delay when dragging apps from the Dock to remove them. When you drag an app off of the Dock, and hold for a few seconds, the cursor will turn to a trash ball. When you release the click, the icon will disappear off of the Dock.

When you drag an icon from the Dock and wait a few seconds, the cursor will change to a trash ball.

Apple has also changed the behavior in the Finder for dragging off items from the sidebar. To remove an item from the sidebar, you must now right-click and select “Remove from Sidebar”; or, hold down the Command key while dragging an item off of the sidebar.
