Less than a month remains in the holiday season, and if you’re like most people, you’re probably scrambling to come up with gift ideas. If there’s a music, movie, or app fan on your list, an iTunes gift card is always a safe bet. Starting today, giving iTunes digital credits is as easy as logging into Facebook.
Earlier this month, the social media giant launched Facebook Gifts, a new program meant to allow users to select, purchase, and send presents directly through Facebook. Starting today, it’s possible to gift iTunes digital content.
The digital gift certificates are available in denominations of $10, $15, $25, or $50. You can also recommend a specific artist or app to your friend. After selecting the gift, you pay with your credit card directly through Facebook Gifts.
While most of Facebook’s prior retailer relationships in regards to Gifts have focused on physical merchandise, the new partnership with Apple could equal large revenue in the form of easily distributable digital gift certificates.
As mentioned by AllThingsD, more than $2 billion of the $7.5 billion Apple generated via iTunes in fiscal year 2012 was from gift cards. Assuming Facebook is keeping a fair percentage of each sale — other retailers like Best Buy allegedly keep about 13-percent — the new program could generate substantial income.
