Olloclip Shows Off Super-Clever iPhone Camera Case [CES 2013]

CES 2013 bug LAS VEGAS, CES 2013 – I, like many of you, love my Olloclip. And while I don’t often use an iPhone case, when I do, I hate having to peel it off just to pop on the super-convenient accessory lens.

Thankfully, Olloclip has weathered the ordeal that was the iPhone 5 launch, and is now back to making cool new stuff. The latest is a case with a slide-open corner for use with the Olloclip. But it packs some really clever extra gimmicks.

The corner of the case unclips and swings over the top of the case – imagine that your iPhone is a movie-maker’s clapper-board, or a Pez dispenser, and you get the idea. But once flipped it’s edge rests on the volume button of the iPhone 5, converting what was a useless piece of plastic into a big, easy-to-press shutter button. Neat, right?

Also neat is the “dock” part of the case, which slides onto the bottom half when needed and adds a tripod mount and a cold-shoe accessory mount, for lights and the like.

Even with all of this loaded up, the case is still pretty small, as you can see in the awesome photos.

The case, which has yet to be named, will be out soon-ish and will probably cost somewhere around $50, although nothing has yet been finalized.

But wait! There’s more. Future Olloclips will ship with an adapter for the latest iPod touch in the box. And a new app will be launching soon which will offer a special mode for each of the fisheye, wideangle and macro lenses, as well as optical correction for all of them.

Still not satisfied? Fine. What about a telephoto lens? Sometime this year you’ll be able to buy a 2x tele Olloclip as a standalone item. I wasn’t allowed to take any photos of the prototype, because it is just a prototype and looks nothing like the final version. Still, it worked well, and there is space on the other side for another lens or filter. I asked for a polarizer, but they’re still weighing up options. If you have a suggestion, leave it in the comments – it could make a difference.

And that’s it. For now, at least…
