If you weren’t paying attention to the calendar on Monday, you might have woke up and thought any number of these clever pranks were the real thing — so here’s a few of the tech-related gags we got a chuckle out of.
Nokia microwaves? Popular “show within a show” TV fare like The Rural Juror and Inspector Spacetime on Hulu? And what’s this about Gmail Blue? Yes, it’s that time again: April 1 is April Fool’s Day, and tech companies have already been busy entertaining us with a few doozies on Monday morning.
Google wasn’t content to pull only one prank this year, so they rolled out a whole bunch of them — such as the announcement that YouTube was just a contest to find the greatest video in the world and now that it’s happened, the service can finally shut down at midnight tonight.
Another favorite is Gmail Blue, complete with an authentic-looking promotional video for a service that simply tints all of your favorite Gmail features blue and calls it brand-new.
Nokia also made us chuckle with a blog post announcing the 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, the company’s first touchscreen microwave oven, inspired by Windows Phone. Available in a variety of colors including “blue cheese cyan, lemon yellow and licorice black,” the €399 box is slated to arrive in Q2. (Yeah, right.)
But this year’s favorite April Fool’s Day prank has to go to Hulu, who devoted an entire blog post to announcing the debut of classic TV shows that only exist within some of your real-life favorites, such as Itchy & Scratchy from The Simpsons, Queen of Jordan and The Rural Juror from 30 Rock and yes, that legendary sci-fi favorite, Inspector Spacetime from Community.
Just keep an eye out for any Apple-related rumors that sound too good to be true today: Gamers already got punk’d last Friday with word of an iOS gaming controller that’s not happening, after all…
