by Yoga apps dominate the health and fitness scene in the App Store, but gaming giant Electronic Arts – best known for action-packed titles like Battlefield and Madden NFL – is something of an unexpected contender in this space. Despite the surprise launch, however, Yogify is an excellent option that makes it easy to pick a target and focus your workout, with various class bundles allowing users to customize the experience to fit their needs.
Yogify is a free download for iPhone, though most of the content can only be accessed via in-app purchases. Five free classes are available initially, while others are sold in sets of five for $1.99 or packs of 15 for $3.99, while advanced or frequent yoga practitioners can snag the entire set of premium classes (45 in total) for $9.99. Luckily, you can preview the structure of each class for free before investing. Classes are organized to work strength, balance, or flexibility, and are structured around three skill levels. Within each group, yogis can take classes to work on certain poses or stretch particular muscles, including handstands, backbends, hip openers, and more.
The music and somewhat cheesy voiceovers in each class will be familiar to anyone that has used a competing yoga app, but where Yogify really shines is with its organization. We love that you can really target what you want to work on, and start at whichever level works for you. Want to learn to do Crow Pose? No problem; this app can get you there. And classes like “Superman Abs” and “Quick & Dirty 30” provide a strength workout comparable to a real yoga class – not something we can say about a lot of apps.
While it may seem a little sneaky of EA to make Yogify look like a free app, its total contents are well worth $9.99 – especially considering that a class at a studio will easily cost you $20. And though we were skeptical at first given the creators’ gaming background, this is the first yoga app we’ve used that comes close to feeling like a real studio workout. Power Yoga practitioners will love it, in particular. We only wish there was an iPad version, and we hope this app continues to offer more classes above and beyond its current selection.
The bottom line. If you’re looking for a yoga app that might actually keep you away from the studio for a while, look no further than Yogify.
