Test Your Reflexes and Your RPG Skills in Nimble Quest – iPad Game Review

nimblequestNimbleBit is known for producing high quality freemium games that can be played without ever investing a cent. Some examples of their most popular titles include Pocket Planes and Tiny Tower, two games that experienced enormous success. Nimble Quest is NimbleBit’s latest game, and while it’s a bit different, it’s another instant must-have hit title.

You’ve probably seen Snake, the casual game that’s been on computers and cell phones since the 70s. In Snake, the idea is to eat to grow while avoiding both the walls and your own snake tail. Nimble Quest works in a similar way, combining Snake-style gameplay with RPG elements.

In the game you will control an ever-increasing conga line of adventurers. You start out with a single warrior on a field populated with a non-stop series of monsters. When you walk near a monster, your warrior will attack, killing it.

As you kill monsters, you will earn coins and experience points, progressing through levels. You will also unlock new adventurers at regular intervals, which will join your warrior.

For example, you might get a mage and a healer, who will fall in line directly behind your warrior. You need to control the entire line of adventurers, making sure not to run into any obstacles like walls or enemies. This is done by swiping on the screen to change directions, a simple but effective control scheme that requires quick reflexes and a lot of attention. Your adventurers keep moving and will run directly into the wall if you don’t steer them straight.

Your conga line will keep growing and growing as you progress through the game until you run into an enemy (or the wall), at which point you will need to restart from the beginning. You do keep the heroes that you have unlocked, so you can start with any one hero you have previously used. The leader, or the “head” of your snake will gain experience and become stronger.

Heroes have different abilities. Some are melee, some are ranged, some use magic, and some heal, so you will have a variety of talents at your fingertips. The game also incorporates a number of power ups which keeps the gameplay dynamic. For example, you might get an attack boost or a power up that temporarily freezes all enemies in a block of ice. You will collect gems as you go, which are used to upgrade the aforementioned power ups, making them more powerful.

As with other NimbleBit games, you can join up with other players in a guild. This allows you access to time-limited Guild Quests which compete against other guilds on a global leaderboard.

Because it is not a management type game like NimbleBit’s other titles, Nimble Quest is quite unique. Pocket Planes and Tiny Tower were games that you could visit a few times a day to update while you waited for timers to count down, but Nimble Quest is entirely interactive.

As a casual arcade-style game, Nimble Quest is fantastic. It offers simple one touch gameplay that’s also quite challenging, along with roleplaying elements that keep the action exciting.

What I liked: Nimble Quest features the same great retro pixellated graphics that you’ve come to know and love in NimbleBit’s other games.

What I didn’t like: Playing an endless game of Snake gets repetitive, even though Nimble Quest uses different characters, abilities, and power ups to keep the gameplay interesting.

To buy or not to buy: Nimble Quest is free and well worth taking the time to download. As with all of NimbleBit’s games, I highly recommend it.
