New Model Kindle Could Be Apple’s Biggest iPad Competition… Again

Kindle Fire HD Vs. iPadAs the summer ticks by and fall grows closer, Apple fans are wringing their hands in anticipation of the company’s next product launch. While nothing is official, we are likely to see a new generation of the iPad and iPad mini. The rumors are just too strong to point to anything different. At the same time that Apple is preparing for what is possibly the biggest launch the company has ever seen, Amazon is doing its own redesigning. According to BGR, the Kindle maker has big plans for the fall 2013 lineup that might put it back on top as the iPad’s biggest competitor.

Unnamed “trusted sources” told BGR that Amazon is planning on upgrading the pixel density for its Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD lines. The tech specs show that Amazon’s new tablets will be Retina display quality, with the 8.9-inch model having a better screen than the fourth-generation iPad.

According to BGR, the 7-inch Kindle Fire will come with a display panel that features a pixel resolution of 1,280 x 800, up from 1,024 x 600. The upgrade puts the base model Kindle Fire on par with the current HD model. Speaking of HD, the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD will sport a new 1,920 x 1,200 pixel resolution screen.

The most interesting change comes with Amazon’s larger tablet. The 8.9-inch Kindle Fire, which currently features a 1,920 x 1,200 pixel display screen will get an upgrade to 2,560 x 1,600. That is better than the current generation 9.7-inch iPad Retina display screen, which is 2,048 x 1,536.

Whether Amazon’s hardware upgrade has an effect on its standing remains to be seen. The iPad still owns a large portion of the market share. While top-quality technology is a major factor in why Apple does so well in the tablet business, it is only part of the story. The iOS app infrastructure is unmatched in quality and quantity. That is something that Amazon, even with its huge selection of books, movies, and games, can’t come close to. Plus, Apple may upgrade its Retina display screen to something even better this fall, like 4,096 x 3,072.
