iTunes 11.1 developer beta introduces us to iTunes Radio which points to an increasing effort to be ready for its full release. While the official release date is still unknown, it is expected to ship with iOS 7 this fall.
While the details of iTunes Radio have been clearly outlined it is interesting to see its current implementation in iTunes. Perhaps the least surprising part is that it integrates in without requiring a full redesign of the entire interface.
iOS testers have been able to try out the service for some time but this represents the first time it has been made available outside of iOS. iTunes Radio is one of the remaining entertainment areas that Apple had yet to master before the announcement came at this year’s World Wide Developer’s Conference.
The beta points to a simple interface and a minimalist approach to creating stations and finding pre-made stations. You can search by artist and block explicit content, and of course you’ll have the ability to easily buy the content. The service is ad supported unless you are a Match subscriber, which is currently $25 a year.
