Having home media server software like Plex is great, but what about those times when you want to access content from somewhere else? A new beta PlexPass feature uses cloud storage from existing providers for just such purpose.
Plex announced Monday the debut of Cloud Sync, a new beta feature available to PlexPass subscribers as part of the Plex Media Server v.0.9.8.10, which also brings 64-bit support for the OS X server software.
Cloud Sync allows content to be uploaded to cloud storage services including Dropbox, Google Drive, Copy or Box, where it becomes available for offline playback from any device, even when the Plex Media Server isn’t available. PlexPass members can also establish smart sync rules, such as uploading only the latest content added to a library.
Once stored via Cloud Sync, content can also be shared with others the same way as it’s done with Plex itself. The feature also intelligently optimizes content for streaming as it’s uploaded, and spreads it across various cloud storage accounts as needed. Users can also limit how much space Cloud Sync consumes, leaving room for non-Plex content as well.
As with any such endeavor, there are a few caveats: Box support is limited to paid accounts, so those of us with 50GB of free storage won’t be able to use it with Cloud Sync, and the feature is limited to paid PlexPass subscribers for now.
Plex Media Server v.0.9.8.10 also delivers a number of important sync fixes, while “massively” improving the overall speed of scanning, along with a number of other bug fixes and enhancements.
