When Apple first launched the second-generation Apple TV, there was plenty of speculation as to whether the company would make the set-top box into an App Store compatible device. There is a limited amount of storage space in the unit that led tech followers to speculate that there was more to come for the “hobby.” They were right.
As the years have gone by, Apple has added more and more channels to its line-up of streaming media possibilities. Most recently, HBO Go, Disney, and ESPN have become available channels. Today, Apple has signed on with two additional media providers to add even more content to Apple TV. Yahoo Screen and PBS now have apps for watching content directly on your television set.
You may have already noticed the new channels when you woke up this morning. Apple adds content like this without requiring a software update. New channels just appear overnight.
To access the PBS channel, Apple TV users can sign in to Facebook, Google+ or through PBS and identify which broadcast affiliate they are using. You don’t have to subscribe to cable to access content from the PBS app, you just have to confirm your location.
PBS is offering full episodes of some of popular shows, including Frontline and Downton Abbey. Shows are not available as live programming, but will be available to watch within 24-hours of broadcasting for most shows.
Users don’t have to log into anything to access Yahoo Screen. The available content, listed by channels, is available right when you log in. You can watch clips and videos from the online media database, including web exclusives. Categories include food, gaming, fashion and beauty, sports, news, and more. Channels include Comedy Central, The Onion, Pop Sugar, ABC News, GQ, Wired, and more.
If you have Apple TV connected to your Internet, you don’t have to do anything to add PBS and Yahoo Screen. They are probably already available now.
