Original Tomb Raider Comes to iOS for 99 Cents

The Tomb Raider series has come a long way since it first appeared way back in 1996, as anyone who’s played the new version by Crystal Dynamics can attest, but if you yearn for a simpler time, there’s good news for you on the App Store today. Starting today, you can get the original game for just a dollar.

Apparently it’s almost like playing the original. In the words of publisher Square Enix, “We’ve not messed about with it, so it’s the full, unedited, unadulterated experience from the classic release at a super-low price.” Even better, today’s release also features the two additional levels that were included with the 1998 rerelease, all building up to what’s reportedly around 15 hours of gameplay. Not bad for a buck.

The press materials themselves make no mention of the new Made-for-iPhone gamepads from Logitech and Moga, although several of the reviewers on the app’s iTunes page are reporting that it does. (If you have any plans to run out and buy a gamepad just to play this, in order words, you might want to wait a bit.)

Of course, there’s always the touch-based controls, and early purchasers are reporting that they work well despite the usual awkwardness of playing games designed for gamepads on a touch screen. You can download the game for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch here.
