Today, Twitter dropped a big update bomb that is specifically meant for the iPad. The larger screen device has been given a few cool features to make tweeting and discovery better than ever. Plus, the company recently announced the rollout of the much-needed Mute function for iOS.

The app’s update to version 6.5 includes a more comprehensive search feature, better viewing of photos and vines, more integrated social features, and more. You can access direct messages quicker, add filters to photos, and see what is trending in the Discover section of the iPad app.

Version 6.5 includes the following iPad updates:

Choose between “Top” and “All” Tweets in search results.

Tweets with Twitter photos, Vine videos and other select content now show a preview in your home timeline

You can reply, retweet, favorite or follow someone straight from a Tweet in your home timeline.

Easier access to DMs.

Choose a filter for your photo.
• Refreshed look for navigation.

Discover has been updated to show Tweets related to Trends.

Mute on Twitter 2

In addition to the useful new iPad features, Twitter has also announced that the social media service has begun rolling out a new feature that will allow users to mute people they follow. No offense, but sometimes, my friends just tweet way too much. I need to take a break from them every once in a while.

Muting a user means that you will no longer see that person’s tweets and retweets in your timeline. You also won’t get a Push Notification when that user is active on Twitter. They will still be able to favorite, reply, and retweet your tweets. They just won’t bug you 25 times per day with their office antics.

To mute a user on an iPhone, select the user’s profile and tap the settings icon. The first options is to “Mute @user.” Currently, the mute funtion is not available on the iPad. However, Twitter notes that they will roll out the feature to everyone in the coming weeks.

You can always unmute a user if you start to miss those funny quips about coworkers. Sometimes, you just need a break.

Twitter for iOS is available on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch for free. Download it in the App Store today.
