Once a genre starts to get a little worn out, the best way to rejuvenate things is to mash it up. That is, why not mix a bit of rhythm tapping with a platformer? Or, how about throwing some battle card action into a fighting game? The world is all wonky with all these mixed up, mashed up game genres. Isn’t it delightful?
This week, Apple gave the coveted Editor’s Choice award to a little mashup called CastleStorm – Free to Siege. The game combines the 2-D physics destruction genre that Angry Birds is so famous for with good old-fashioned tower defense mechanics.
Players build custom castles that are used in battle. Different types of rooms yield different types of troops. Players set a wide variety of turrets, ballista weapons, and more to launch hilarious ammo like apple grenades, homing eagles, and flying sheep.
Send your troops to battle to attack nearby enemies. Cast spells, fight on the ground, and fling stuff at your opponent’s castle to destroy it.
Use money you’ve earned from battle to upgrade your weapons, ammo, and armor.
