Box.com has become a popular choice for professionals needing cloud storage and they continue to update it with new features. The newest offering is a note taking feature, with cloud integration and an updated iOS app. But is it enough to compete with the cloud services of Google, Microsoft, and Amazon?
I originally signed up for Box.com when they started offering 50GB of free cloud storage when signing up to use their iOS app. There are still limitations with the maximum upload size when using the free service, but Box is very good at running in the cloud and you can try it out with no risks. With the addition of notes, you are able to consolidate multiple tasks into a single platform instead of having to switch between them. Here’s an excerpt from their blog announcement:
“At its core, Box Notes is about making it easy to work with others. It promotes the sharing of information and collaboration. Live, concurrent editing lets everyone read and make changes instantly together. This is great for meetings – even when some participants aren’t in the office. And with today’s global workforce, not everyone is online and working at the same time – Box Notes is great for those situations too. Notes are automatically available to collaborators of the folder, so there’s no need to share each individual note with the people who need it.”
It doesn’t sound very different from Google Docs, and in many ways they do indeed share the same footprint. These days you can find a number of services which provide online storage and the choice is highly dependent on features, compatibility with your other tools, and personal preference. While I keep my Box account active and I think the note feature is pretty nice, my primary accounts are with some of the bigger companies.
