On Monday, unconfirmed reports that Apple had acquired Swell, a popular radio and podcast compiler app available for both iPhone and iPad, began circulating from various sources. At the time, Re/Code had noted the deal was worth around $30M and while the financial details surrounding the acquisition remain a mystery, Apple has now confirmed the deal to The Wall Street Journal.
Both the Swell app and website were shut down earlier today, leaving a simple message for users advising them that the service would no longer be available and thanking them for their support.
Thank you for using Swell over the past year. We wanted to let you know that the Swell service is no longer available. We’ve been inspired by the opportunity to create quality products that positively impact users’ lives, and we are grateful to all our listeners. Thank you everyone for your support!
While earlier reports also noted the Swell team would be joining Apple post-purchase, potentially working on improving the in-house podcast app by Apple, that portion still remains unconfirmed at this point.
