The marketplace is constantly changing and the iPad is playing an increasing role as point-of-sale technology is improving in reliability and scope. One company that seems to be overcoming the challenges inherent with a large scale, cloud based, iPad system is Revel Systems and they have now installed iPads at 30 concession stands at Alabama State University.
One of the biggest hurdles that had to be overcome is the reliance on internet connectivity and access to the cloud. The newest Revel software can function without internet connection, allowing vendors to continue to process orders in less than ideal situations. They even continued to operate during a power outage at the stadium.
In addition to working without the internet, Revel powered iPads store enough of the system locally that any speed issues that are present on systems which rely more heavily on cloud functionality are overcome and they can process orders up to 14{813a954d5e225a1509f22204ece89c855080ce25555f20805f61bed63cbfde3b} faster.
“Revel’s stadium iPad point-of-sale solution was created to combat any problems that might arise in a stadium environment,” said Lisa Falzone, co-founder and CEO of Revel Systems. “During last year’s ‘Big Game’ between the Baltimore Ravens & San Francisco 49ers, the stadium experienced a 30-minute blackout that shut down the entire operation. Fans had nothing to do except wait for the power to come back on, costing concessions a lot of money since the POS systems were also offline. The technology behind Revel Systems allows the POS to keep on going, even if the game stops.”
Revel, which has been around since 2010, has a wide range of POS solutions, but the installation for Alabama State is their biggest yet. It will be interesting to see how the system holds up over the course of the season with tens of thousands of orders and it seems that both Revel and Alabama State are believers.
