At today’s big event, the iPhone 6 and it’s larger brother, the iPhone 6 Plus, were revealed. Practically everything we read about the new smartphone has already been leaked, but here is a rundown of the official details of the two new products.
Two New Sizes
Not only has Apple done away with the four-inch model, but it has just launched two new larger sized screens, 4.7 and 5.5-inches respectively. Both models feature a newly designed “Retina HD” display and have a redesigned button layout with the Sleep/Wake button on the side instead of the top.
The iPhone 6 screen measures 4.7 inches and the device is 6.9mm thick. The iPhone 6 Plus screen measures 5.5 inches and the handset is 7.1mm thick.
Display Screen
The iPhone 6 packs one million pixels into the 1334 x 750, 326ppi screen. The iPhone 6 Plus manages to contain two million pixels into the 1920 x 1080, 401ppi screen. The former has 38 percent more pixels than the iPhone 5s and the latter has 85 percent more.
Landscape Mode
Both iPhone 6 models support landscape mode for stock apps and the Home screen. Previously, apps like Messages, Calendar, and Reminders, were only viewable in portrait mode. The larger screen iPhone 6 and 6 Plus makes room for landscape mode capabilities.
Faster Processor
Just as we expected, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will have a faster processor. The A8 is a 20-nanometer processor with two billion transisitors. It is 13 percent smaller, has a 25 percent faster CPU, and has 50 percent faster graphics capabilities.
The M8 motion coprocessor chip will track when you go up and down stairs using a barometer that reads relative air pressure.
Battery Life
The battery power is significantly faster on the iPhone 6 Plus and incrementally faster on the iPhone 6. You can have twice as much battery life listening to music on the 6 Plus compared to the iPhone 5s and 20 hours more 3G talk. In standby mode, the iPhone 6 Plus lasts six days longer than both the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6.
Camera Upgrade
The camera on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have some interesting new software and hardware features. For example, the new devices come with a new sensor called “Focus Pixels,” which improves autofocus and face detection. The Panorama feature takes 43 megapixel images. The iPhone 6 has a digital image stabilizer and the 6 Plus has an optical image stabilizer (OIS), which moves the lens around to adjust for hand shake.
The video camera takes 1080 HD video at 30 or 60 frames per second (FPS). The Slo-Mo feature takes video at 120 or 240 FPS. The video camera also features cinematic video stabilization and Focus Pixels for continuous autofocus.
Faster Wireless
The new smartphones from Apple will have faster LTE download speeds and support up to 20 LTE bands. When on Wi-Fi, you can get up to three times faster speed than the iPhone 5s.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will also let you initiate phone calls through Wi-Fi using your phone number. That way, you can still make a call, even if your cellular signal is good. if you go out of range of Wi-Fi, you’ll transition to voice-over LTE.
Pricing
The iPhone 6 Plus starts at $299 for the 16GB model with the 64GB model coming in at $399 and the new size 128 GB model will be 499. As you can see, there is no longer a 32GB model iPhone.
The iPhone 6 costs $199 for the 16GB, $299 for the 64GB and $399 for the $128GB models.
Apple also dropped the price of the iPhone 5s to $99 for the 16GB model and $149 for the 32GB model. You can grab the 8GB model iPhone 5c for free. Of course, these are locked into a two-year contract with a carrier.
