Apple Voice Recognition Hires Point to Siri Getting Neural Networking Update

Siri is a big deal. It wasn’t the first voice recognition tool, but in conjunction with iOS and the iPhone it has been brought to the masses. According to Wired.com, Apple is now poised to incorporate neural networking technology into its voice recognition system.

Siri is an example of Apple repackaging technology in a way that is both approachable and still powerful, creating buzz around voice recognition and technology interaction that no one has been able to match. Other companies have perhaps released more advanced systems, which already take advantage of neural networking technology and it seems that Apple is finally making a push towards Siri 2.0.

Voice recognition systems which use neural networking functionality, are modeled after brain connections to create a powerful comprehension tool which has the ability to learn words and develop additional capacities over time. How do we know that Apple is moving in this direction? Developers with expertise in voice recognition are being hired away from other companies in the same area.

From an article by Robert McMillan at Wired.com:

“Apple is not hiring only in the managerial level, but hiring also people on the team-leading level and the researcher level,” says Abdel-rahman Mohamed, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Toronto, who was courted by Apple. “They’re building a very strong team for speech recognition research.”

When will an update occur in iOS? Since much of Siri’s functionality relies on backend services hosted by Apple there is the possibility that we wouldn’t even be aware of a change, however we’ll undoubtedly hear about the update when it arrives. Of course voice recognition is just one element of Siri and it relies on contextual data, iOS features, and a large set of specifically designed capabilities which tie into existing apps, but I believe that there is certainly room for improvement for Siri.
