Today at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple made a few big announcements, one of them was the complete overhaul of its mobile operating system. The updated iOS 7 is expected to launch this fall and there are a lot of new features in the future.
First of all, the entire operating system has been redesigned. Just as we heard a couple of weeks ago, iOS 7 got black, white, and flat all over. That is to say there is no more realistic-looking interface, also known as skeuomorphism , is completely gone.
The new operating system features a flatter design with new icons, and a more harmonious visual aesthetic with all of the iOS apps.
The color palate has been completely changed with a whole new array of hues. The keypad, as well as some other features, will be translucent so that you can see what is behind it.
The look is completely different, from the motion tracking background images to redesigned numbers keypads for the iPhone, you’ll see an entirely new look. But, looks aren’t everything. Apple also has a lot of new and awesome features with iOS 7.
The weather app features motion animation of the current weather conditions. For example, if it is raining outside, the app will feature rain. If there is a lightning storm, you will see lightning.
The new iOS will feature Control Center, which is a way to quickly access some of your device’s settings, like Wi-Fi, Airplane mode, Do Not Disturb, Bluetooth, Brightness, and iTunes playback controls.
In the Calendar app, you will be able to swipe from side-to-side to change days and pinch to zoom outward so that you can see all months in a year.
The iMessage app now features swipe gestures, too. When you are reading a conversation, you can swipe from left to right to access other message conversations.
With iOS 7 users will be able to add additional pages inside their folders for exponentially more room in each folder for apps.
Multitasking has been improved to work with individual user’s activities. For example, if you access Facebook multiple times each day, iOS 7 will notice that and keep refreshing the sync to that app. If you only check your news app in the mornings, iOS 7 will notice that, too and only sync in the mornings. Additionally, when you receive a notification from one of your apps, iOS 7 will automatically refresh the sync, instead of you having to refresh when you open the app.
Speaking of notifications, Notification Center has been redesigned to include a daily “At-a-Glance” feature so that you can see what is going on that day. Plus, for the first time, Notification Center will be available from the Lock screen.
The iOS 7 Photos app will be completely redesigned to include Moments, a new way to organize your images. Moments collects your photos into groups based on date, time, and location. Photo Sharing will be updated to include iCloud Photo Sharing, where users can upload images on either end, that is you and your friends and family can upload images and comment on pictures.
The camera app will be updated to include real-time filter additions and the ability to take square pictures.
Safari has also been redesigned with a black-and-white theme and full-screen browsing. You can now view your bookmarks and Safari tabs with rolodex-style scrolling. The new Safari also includes iCloud Keychain, which stores your passwords and credit card information on iOS.
Siri is getting a few new features, including much more information via deep integration with Twitter, Bing, Wikipedia, and a full encyclopedia. What’s more, Siri will get a new voice, and even the option of switching between male and female.
Just as we thought, Apple has announced the launch of iRadio. This new streaming music feature will let users stream music from more than 200 stations. Similar to Pandora, the new service will create a playlist based on songs you have already listened to. The more you use iRadio’s stations, the more the service generates a customized experience for you. Apple’s new iRadio service will be free with advertisement support. Users who already subscribe to iTunes Match will get iRadio, ad-free.
The features we have just listed are actually only a few of the many new features that we can expect this fall. Additional features that there wasn’t enough time to demonstrate include FaceTime audio-only mode, Notification sync between devices, Night Mode in maps, and so much more.
The iOS 7 beta is available now for registered developers. It will launch for the public this fall as a software update for the iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini, and fifth-generation iPod touch.
