Question: Whenever I try using headphones with my iMac, the internal speakers remain active, so I get audio through the speakers in addition to my headphones. Why is this happening and how can I fix it so the sound is only coming through the headphones?
Answer: This is an issue that can easily happen if you are using USB-based headphones. By default, OS X will keep playing sound through the internal speakers even after a USB headset has been connected. Fortunately, this is easy to correct. Follow these steps to correct the issue, and get your Mac playing audio through the desired location:
