Atom Run Review – Run for the Life of All Humanity in This Platformer

Atom Run 1

Last week, Fingerlab launched a new iOS platform game that looks good enough to be a console game. The quality graphics combine with the retro gameplay to bring a solid arcade style game to the iPad.

Atom Run is a platform game that requires skills and timing that push your abilities to their maximum. The game may seem easy on the surface, but if you want to get anywhere, you’ve got to be good.

Players control Elgo, the last unsullied robot. The rest of the mechanical monsters turned evil after a radiation event destroyed humanity. Elgo is on the hunt to track down all atom and molecules, the elements that make up life. Using left and right controls and a jump button, players control Elgo and run through deadly mazes to find the elements needed to bring humankind back to Earth.

To move Elgo, use the left and right virtual buttons on the left side of the screen. To make him jump, use the button on the right side of the screen. You can get a little higher by tapping twice to perform a double jump. On some levels, Elgo can use a jetpack, which is triggered by the jump button as well.

The goal of each level is to collect the atoms and get to the end within a certain period of time. The faster you go, the higher your score. You’ll also earn badges for finding all atoms and finding the hidden molecule on each level. You can’t continue to the next zone without earning a certain number of badges. The further along you go in the game, the higher the required amount of badges is.

Obstacles include such things as fire pits, electromagnetic beams, angry robots, and runaway buzz saws. Players must be quick, but must also plan for getting around obstacles. It may not be difficult to find every atom, but finding them in 30 seconds or less is nearly impossible. Just getting through a level that fast is hard enough. The levels get harder as the game progresses, so what seemed like a reasonable task in the first six levels becomes an unobtainable future for your little robot friend.

What I liked: The game plays very smoothly. The controls work great. This game is also MFi controller supported, so be sure to connect your SteelSeries Stratus and get the most out of the game.

What I didn’t like: Although the game gets progressively harder, bringing with it more challenging obstacles, it does start to get a bit mundane after a while.

Verdict: I definitely recommend this game to fans of arcade action platform games. The levels are exciting and you really have to push your abilities to the limit to earn those badges. The price is reasonable and you’ll get hours of gameplay from this fun title.
