Bake for a Special Occasion with Wilton Cake Ideas & More – iPad App Review

Even if you don’t know fondant from royal icing, Wilton’s Cake Ideas & More cake decorating app is a source of ideas and inspiration for making a everything from a wedding cake to iced cookies or brownie pops.

With its included 3,000 ideas, a user could create something new every day for more than 8 years. The app’s UI is easy to navigate, as the reader can peruse it by category (e.g. Fondant, Gingerbread, 5 kinds of cake pops), celebration, theme, rating, and difficulty. There were 92 different ideas for Thanksgiving alone including a range of mini cakes, a pilgrim hat candy cup, and a stunning Autumn Leaves cake.

If the free ideas still don’t have what you’re looking for, then you have the option to download Wilton’s 2013 Yearbook through in-app purchase for $14.99, or in smaller subject areas (birthday, wedding, holiday) for in-app purchase. The 2012 Yearbook, a bargain at $7.99, is also available.

To get started, pick a project, like the Plentiful Plumage Turkey Brownie Pop, for example. The information screen begins with step-by-step instructions. The user can access Wilton’s list of ingredients, as well as suggested tools, techniques, patterns, and reviews for the recipe. There are hyperlinks for further instruction, so as long as the user is connected to the web she can get more information about specific techniques with a single tap.

The app separates cake creation from decoration by tapping decorate mode, which spells out the steps to putting all the finishing touches on your dessert. For the Turkey Brownie pops, this section included a breakdown of making the fondant cut-outs needed to make the turkey’s feathers and waddle.

The app allows a user to bookmark her favorite recipes, which makes it easier to track down a particular set of instructions.

Download Wilton Cake Ideas & More for free from the App Store. Optional in-app purchases lets a user access even more content if she chooses.

What I liked: I was impressed by the huge variety of recipes available in the free version. It’s not just for bakers of fondant covered cakes either. There were simpler suggestions for cookies and cupcakes. The app does a good job of breaking complex projects into manageable steps.

What I didn’t like: Despite a recent update that improved stability, the app still crashed a few times, and occasionally the content didn’t load.

To buy or not to buy: Wilton Cake Ideas can be a resource for anyone with an interest in cake decorating. The free version offers more than enough ideas to get most bakers started.
