Until recently, I didn’t waste time with two different apps for Facebook communications. The official app works just fine for checking in, reading your timeline, and chatting with others. The only reason I ended up downloading Facebook’s Messenger app was to have faster, less distracted communication with my band mates who use it exclusively to communicate.
However, I still enjoy having the chat feature inside the Facebook app. When I’m browsing my friends’ status updates, I can easily talk with buddies who just want to say “hi.”
Within the next few days, Facebook is changing that. The company has decided to require chats to take place exclusively within the Messenger app instead.
After the rollout is complete, Facebook users on iOS who don’t have the Messenger app installed will receive a notification that Messages is moving. You can download the new service right away, or set a reminder to grab it later. At some point, however, you won’t be able to send or receive chats from the official Facebook app.
A statement was sent directly to TechCrunch earlier:
“In the next few days, we’re continuing to notify more people that if they want to send and receive Facebook messages, they’ll need to download the Messenger app. As we’ve said, our goal is to focus development efforts on making Messenger the best mobile messaging experience possible and avoid the confusion of having separate Facebook mobile messaging experiences. Messenger is used by more than 200 million people every month, and we’ll keep working to make it an even more engaging way to connect with people.”
When Messenger is installed, you will receive the chat notification while in the Facebook app, but when you tap to read it, you will automatically switch to Messenger. It is not inconvenient by any means, and is actually easier to use than opening the Facebook app to chat. According to Facebook, more people use Messenger to send photos, group messages, stickers, and videos in chat then they do using the function inside Facebook. So, from the company’s point of view, this is a better way to make use of time and energy spent on maintenance and upkeep of chat coding.
