Stuck with a mere 16GB on your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad? That may no longer be an issue if manufacturer Kanex has anything to say about it, introducing a new inexpensive option for creating a private cloud at CES.
Engadget is reporting that accessory maker Kanex has unveiled its latest product at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and this time it’s not a display peripheral or budget-priced cable but something much cooler.
Priced at a mere $99, the company’s forthcoming meDrive is a tiny white box that acts as a file server between your network, USB storage devices and most any device you already have, including iOS, Mac or PCs.
Plug the meDrive into your local network using an Ethernet cable, jack in a USB hard drive and within minutes you’ll be serving files to and from iOS devices and computers using WebDAV. Kanex has positioned the meDrive as the perfect solution for users of Apple’s Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps, but its potential goes well beyond just those products.
“What makes the meDrive file server unique is that it has built-in WebDAV and Bonjour support which enables iOS devices to easily connect to the drive and read/write, access and share Apple iWork files,” said, Kelvin Yan, Kanex president.
“meDrive basically becomes your WebDAV server for your iPad. And because it’s connected to a network, any other devices can connect, share and access files on the drive including OS X and Windows.”
Best of all, meDrive is available now for a mere $99 and works in conjunction with the free meDrive File Manager app for iOS, which should be rolling into the App Store any moment now.
