Expecting to (eventually) jailbreak iOS 6.0 on your A5 or A6 powered device? Don’t update to iOS 6.1 when it lands. Apple has ratched up the security features in the first major point release update to the latest version of iOS, making it significantly more difficult to crack than iOS 6.0.
According to iOS hacker i0n1c:
There must have been some change of guard at Apple.iOS6.1 adds again tougher protections although public JB community hasn’t broken iOS6 yet.
There’s no more details of what he means, but i0n1c is a proven talent in the jailbreak scene, and he certainly knows what he’s talking about.
There was, of course, a recent “change of the guard” when former iOS chief Scott Forstall was recently fired. The new boss of iOS at Apple, Craig Ferenghi, may have a much lower tolerance for jailbreaking Apple’s mobile operating system.
Not that jailbreaking iOS 6 has proven easy. The sophistication of security on iOS has reached the point that it takes years to get up to speed with trying to crack it, meaning that the only remaining hackers working on plausible exploits are veterans who are more likely to sell their exploits than work on a free, public jailbreak.
Either way, though, progress is reportedly being made, and iOS 6 should eventually be jailbreakable. iOS 6.1, however, is a much dicier proposition. So if you want to jailbreak, don’t update.
