Television sets are quickly being replaced by mobile devices as the hot electronic purchase. NPD DisplaySearch recently released a report showing the trend in mobile flat panel displays (FPD). Smarphones, tablets, and laptops are on schedule to surpass LCD TV displays by five percent this year. By 2016, more than half of all FPD revenue will come from mobile devices.
According to NPD DisplaySearch, mobile displays will account for 42 percent of FPD revenue in 2014. Television screen revenue, which has been on top since 2006 will account for 37 percent.
“With strong growth in tablet PCs, high-end notebooks, and smartphones—especially high resolution and wide-viewing angle displays—mobile devices are leading the growth of the FPD industry,” said David Hsieh, vice president of NPD DisplaySearch. “Mobile devices are expected to expand their revenue lead over LCD TV in the years to come, with nearly half of all FPD revenue by 2016.”
Worldwide revenue for FPDs are expected to reach $131 billion this year, which is only one percent higher than last year. While mobile displays are growing in popularity, LCD TV panels are declining.
Last year, analysts predicted that tablet sales would surpass PC sales by 2015. It makes sense that the average user would find browsing on a tablet to be more convenient than a desktop or laptop. Of course, the world still needs full computing capabilities, but sitting around at home, checking emails and updating Facebook doesn’t require that much power. A tablet is a good replacement.
However, it is hard to imagine that the average living room would be sporting an iPad instead of a 42-inch flat screen television set. It may be that consumer trends will move toward tablet purchases on a regular basis, while the family TV set will stick around a few additional years before getting replaced.
