DotPen Hopes to Redefine What a ‘Fine Tip’ Touch Screen Stylus is

I’ve not tested a whole lot of styluses in my lifetime. The few I have tried out have left me feeling a bid… mushy. I know it is difficult to make a touch screen pen because the material needs to be capacitive. But you’d think that, by now, someone would have perfected the materials so that tablet styluses would feel more like real pens.

Well, Dot-Tec believes it has done so. The DotPen is a new fine tip touch screen stylus that is made from a strong, thermoplastic tip that doesn’t feel mushy when you press down on it. It features “MagicTouch” technology that works with a variety of touch screen devices with the true feel of a writing pen.

The pen is made from machined aluminum with an anodized finish. It has a soft rubberized writing grip and features a 1.9mm “Active-Quill” tip made from thermoplastic. It runs on a single AAA battery, which delivers up to 12 hours of drawing and writing.

“We love our iPads and Android tablets, as creative people we use them to take notes, make sketches, and even draw works of art,” Says Andrew Ngo, Dot-Tec designer. “We played with many capacitive pens, but they just don’t work well – Poor accuracy, clumsy fat rubber writing points, horrible latency, and lousy designs. We wanted a high-quality pen that feels authentic and simply works well.”

The DotPen is currently preparing for mass production. However, to cover the cost of the initial minimum order, Dot-Tec is looking to us to for funding. The company has launched a Kickstarter campaign that offers a sizable discount on preorders of the first 500 units. For only $49, you can get a DotPen, which will retail for $69 when the product officially launches. The product is estimated to be ready for delivery in Nov. 2014.
