SXSW is well known as a music and movie showcase, but there is so much more that it offers to attendees in the form of non-stop presentations on a variety of cutting edge topics. The EDU portion of SXSW started on Monday and the listed presentations made by educators, for educators, shows an interesting trend in education training.
SXSWedu packs in presentations and events all day long for 4 days ending on Thursday. There are 20 different themes which include traditional education topics such as civic engagement and education policy, mixed in with new areas such as social engagement and mobile technology.
If organizers follow precedent set in previous years, many of the presentations will be posted on their YouTube channel, either in part or in full. Looking through the schedule for this week I was surprised at the minimal presentations on mobile technology. There are a few but the majority are looking at traditional education topics. In many ways I believe this the exact right approach because technology should never overshadow the important fundamentals in teaching and learning.
Even the modules focused on mobile technology in the classroom seem to blend technology with solid education principles. Only a few seemingly focus solely on technology, one of which discusses texting in the classroom as a lecture option.
Once SXSW is over I will be posting a review of some the topics covered as they relate to iOS and the iPad. For now, keep checking in at the SXSW YouTube channel to see if/when information is posted.
