GM Will Get First Crack at Siri-Based Automobile Voice Command

Siri integration with ChevyUnfortunately for owners of Ford cars, General Motors will be the first to integrate voice-activated Siri assistance into two of their Chevrolet models using Apple’s new “Eyes Free” mode in iOS 6.

USA Today is reporting that General Motors will become the first automaker to hitch Apple’s Siri to their wagons, in this case with forthcoming models of its two smallest cars, the Chevrolet Spark and Sonic.

“‘Siri in Eyes Free mode’ will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands,” boasts Cristi Landy, Chevrolet’s marketing director for small cars. “Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers, and Siri complements MyLink’s existing capabilities.”

The GM announcement follows word that Ford will also be improving its voice recognition service beginning with the 2014 model of its Fiesta. The dueling announcements were made just ahead of previews rolling out during a big auto show in Los Angeles, where small cars have become all the rage.

The report claims Chevy Spark and Sonic owners will be able to chat with Siri to get information or phone up friends, all while keeping their eyes on the road ahead — assuming they have an iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 or recent iPad, that is.
