iOS and the App Store have created an impact on so many areas of the entertainment industry and a new game called Godzilla: Strike Zone from Warner Brothers is a perfect example of using an app to market a new movie. Strike Zone was released this week and is a basic first person shooter with three levels. It took me about 20 minutes to beat the entire game but since it was free I didn’t really mind that it was so short.
The new Godzilla movie is going to be released next week and Strike Zone is a small part of the marketing for the film. There are two types of apps that accompany films with the first being free and fairly lightweight and the second having more substantial content and costing money. Once released, the movie studio hopes for some traction from fans and some buzz on the internet.
I sincerely doubt that I will go see the movie based on playing Strike Zone, but the more that people talk about it (or write about it on blogs), the more general interest there will be surrounding the film. The truth is that I am more likely to see the movie because it stars Heisenberg (Bryan Cranston), which is a huge step up from the 90’s version with Matthew Broderick and its horrible CGI.
Strike Zone has three simple levels. The first level involves skydiving through the city, the second is rescuing civilians stuck in a building, and the final level is running from Godzilla as you head to a roof top. The controls are pretty good and I didn’t notice any glaring issues. I did have to recalibrate the tilt controls because at first it was hard to control. You get to use a gun but only when there is a target outlined in red and you also get to set explosives.
Overall this is a fun little diversion that won’t take long to complete but if you are excited for the movie then this is a perfect appetizer. Since it’s free you can easily check it out.
