On the Mac, you can enable a password for your user account by opening Apple menu > System Preferences > Users & Groups, and selecting your name from the list of users.

Once there, click on the “Change Password” button beside your user picture. A dialog will pop up, allowing you to set (or change) your account password. If your password was blank before, then you’ll leave the “Old Password” field blank.

You can further secure your Mac by turning off Automatic Login, which bypasses the security and allows someone to boot up your Mac into your user account. You can avoid this by clicking Login Options in the Users & Groups System Preference pane, and selecting “Off” from the Automatic Login drop-down menu.

Securing your iOS devices with a password lock is just as easy. Navigate to Settings > General > Passcode Lock, and tap on the “Turn Passcode On” option. You will then be prompted to specify a password and repeat it.

Sliding the unlock switch on the lock screen will prompt you to enter the passcode that you just set. This security measure will keep a thief from using your device, or a nosy person from perusing your data.
