Kensington Folio Trio Review

It’s pretty big, but if you’re not a bag person, this could be just the thing.

The Kensington Folio Trio is a full-featured mobile workstation, complete with built-in iPad stand, notepad holder, 3-ring binder for notes, folio for papers, card holders, pen loops, and iPad stylus loop. In theory, the Folio Trio is great—it holds everything you’d need for an office meeting, and keeps it nicely organized. It’s also sturdily constructed of faux-leather—which, if you’re an animal lover, you might appreciate, though most will probably expect real leather for the price.

In practice, the setup is more cumbersome than it’s worth. Empty, the Folio Trio weighs a full pound more than the newest 1.44-pound iPad. This is without a notebook or any other papers. Folded, it’s also nearly the size of a 15-inch MacBook Pro, but half an inch thicker. Needless to say, this thing is large. It’s also awkward to use the case in stand mode. I got accustomed to it after a while, but propping up the iPad takes some getting used to.

The bottom line.
People like the iPad because it’s light and portable, and the Folio Trio obliterates that. If you work in an office and you’re taking your iPad (and a pad of paper) to every meeting, you will probably find this useful, especially if you don’t haul your iPad home and back very often. But most of us will probably prefer a smart cover and a notebook.
