Harper’s Magazine released its first issue in June of 1850 and quickly sold out of every single issue of the 7,500 copies made. The publication has featured such literary greats as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Hunter S. Thompson. Politically-charged contributions from Seymour Hersh, Noam Chomsky, and Howard Zinn have peppered the pages of this distinguished magazine.
Harper’s Magazine has just been digitized for iOS and is available as a monthly subscription publication in the App Store. You can purchase individual issues for $5.99 each. Or, for $21.99 per year, you will get 12 issues of the full magazine. Plus, you will get web access to Harper’s 160-year archive of past articles.
Each issue of the digital version includes all of the articles, illustrations, and photographs of the print edition. Once you’ve downloaded your first issue, you will be able to access the Table of Contents, individual articles, and all pages by swiping left to right or scrolling up and down.
The app has been specifically designed to give readers “a straightforward and elegant reading experience.” The app was developed by 29th Street Publishing, which created the Poetry, ProPublica, and The Awl app, among other popular digital magazines for mobile devices.
The Harper’s Archive is available when you fill out the subscription form under the “Manage Subscription” section of the app. Once you have entered your email address and created a password, you can visit the Harper’s Archive website and enter your account information to access articles, comics, and commentaries dating all the way back to the first issue in June of 1850.
The Harper’s Magazine app is available on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch for free. Individual issues cost $5.99 each and a one-year subscription costs $21.99. Download it in the App Store today.
