Nest Unveils ‘Protect’ an iPhone and iPad Enabled Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors can be obnoxious. I was making grilled cheese sandwiches last week and I accidentally let one cook a little too long and the fire alarm started blaring. There wasn’t a fire but the alarm going off created chaos with the kids and it even went off again after I deactivated it because I didn’t open the window fast enough. How much did that alarm cost? Probably $20-30. Now there is a better option.

Nest is a very innovative company which makes a smart thermostat and now a smoke detector. Both devices are controlled by iOS apps and are very smart. The smoke detector is called Nest Protect and it does a couple things which are incredibly smart.

The first is that it gives you a warning before letting a loud alarm blare. The warning actually provides information about the location of the smoke and will help you efficiently find the issue.

The second thing is that you can wave your hands to deactivate the alarm. Hopefully if you are running around the house waving your arms because there is an emergency it wont shut off the alarm prematurely.

The last thing is the light that Nest Protect has built in. It can light your way out of the house and also uses the light to inform you of the battery status. Both features are enhanced with the use of the iOS app, which is also going to be able to control the Nest thermostat starting in November.

Nest Protect is both a smoke detector and a CO detector and comes in two colors. It also has battery and wired models. The only reason why I wouldn’t buy this product today is that in my house I have 10 smoke alarms and it doesn’t make sense to only replace a few of them which means a large investment at $129 a piece. That is a difference of about $300 and $1290. Of course since I have 10 working smoke detectors I don’t think it is worth changing them at all. I do like them but I don’t think I’ll be able to switch.
