Apple’s 30-pin dock connector has been standard in iDevices since it first showed up in the classic iPod in 2003, but it’s time for a change. Rumors have been circulating that Apple is working on an all new slimmer design for the dock connector, freeing up much needed space in its iDevices.
According to new photos leaked from French website Nowhereelse.fr, Apple’s new, tiny 9-pin dock connector will be almost identical in size to a Micro USB plug.
Though there’s no way to verify the validity of the photos, the dock connector pictured does look similar to other leaked photos that were previously released.
While Apple’s 9-pin dock connector is similar in size to a Micro USB plug, the two are not identical, and are unlikely to be compatible. Apple’s connector is both longer and thinner than the standard Micro USB plug.
Apple’s connector will feature eight exposed pins on either side of a metal shell, which is the ninth contact point. This will allow it to be used in either orientation, making charging new iDevices a simpler task.
We can expect to see Apple’s new dock connector in the sixth generation iPhone, which is set to be released on September 12th. In all likelihood, the next generation iPad and the rumored iPad mini will also feature the smaller connector.
