We’ve heard a lot about how strong the rumored sapphire crystal screens for the iPhone 6 supposedly are, but a new YouTube video from famed parts leaker Sonny Dickson today may have allowed us to see for ourselves for the first time. The “may” is important, as questions remain as to whether the item is actually sapphire crystal and whether the material can actually withstand scratching or breakage.
In the video, the glass is subjected to a stress test, but it’s never subjected to the type of extreme bending that would cause it to shatter. What we see, however, is impressive. Currently commenters are asking for more videos, to which Dickson replied, “Tomorrow!” It’s not clear if he plans on posting any videos that show the purported piece of sapphire glass being subjected to the type of scratching or breakage a normal iPhone would endure.
If legit, it marks the first time we’ve actually seen the front panel for the next iPhone model in action. Sapphire glass is said to be more scratch-resistant and tougher than the Gorilla Glass Apple currently uses for its displays (although at least one report claimed the opposite), although there’s a slim chance that it’ll only appear on the pricier rumored 5.5-inch iPhone 6 rather than the similarly rumored 4.7-inch model. Both are expected to debut around September 25.
Dickson has already started to post some new videos as promised, such as the one above showing the part he showed in an earlier video next to an iPhone 5s for a size comparison.
