The rumor mill is ramping up for the iPhone 6 and it looks like it’s going to be all about size this time around. A photo has emerged that claims to show the new iPhone 6 case and if it is accurate then it seems instead of a new iPhone, Apple might actually just be releasing a smaller iPad Mini with phone capabilities.
The rumors have been circulating that the new iPhone might have either a 4.7” or a 5.5” screen size, and if it is released as a 5.5” device then it would be remarkably close in size to the iPad Mini. A phone that big might certainly make some users happy because it means they’ll have a lot more screen and still retain phone functionality, but it would likely cannibalize iPad Mini sales as it would duplicate much of the draw from the larger device.
There have been times I wish I could make phone calls from my iPad and so I understand the attraction to a larger phone, but I carry my iPhone in my pocket and that would hardly be feasible when considering a larger iPhone. In fact, I often prefer the low profile of my current iPhone 5s in meetings where I should be paying attention but instead find myself bored. It’s harder to pull that off with a larger device and a larger iPhone may not be better in every situation.
Another downside to a potentially larger phone is using it while exercising. I attach my phone to my arm in a specially design band and a larger phone is not going to work as nicely. If a new iPhone 6 is larger, then I expect there to also be a smaller alternative or perhaps the iWatch will finally be released and could be the smaller device I need. No matter what the future holds, there are going to be a lot of rumors leading up to the official announcement and release.
