Notegraphy Review

There are lots of ways to quickly create compelling works of art on our iPhones and iPads. One-touch filters and easy overlays have turned us all into amateur graphic artists, even if we don’t have the most artistic of eyes. Notegraphy is cut from that cloth. With an emphasis on social sharing, the app automatically stylizes everything you write with a keen artistic flourish, turning your most mundane thoughts into stunning inspirational displays.

Notegraphy’s creation process is one of the best we’ve seen. The interface is gorgeous, with a light feel that fits the iOS 7 style without sacrificing its own character. Starting a new note sends you directly to a blank page with a retractable keyboard and a clever gesture for adding new pages — just tap the right corner and swipe to the left.

Once your thoughts have been recorded, they’re ready to be dressed up. Tapping the “Style” button sends you to a new screen where you can choose from a couple dozen different designs that can instantly be applied to your text. There’s a bold, professional streak throughout all of them, and a clever stationary slider lets you select one of three color options. Designs can be posted to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Tumblr, or published to your gallery for fellow Notegraphers to find.

We enjoyed trying out the different designs on our notes, but a severe lack of customization sucked all of the fun out of the process. Every layout utilizes the first letter of your note as its main design element — though curiously not as a drop cap — and we were frustrated by the lack of control over what was displayed. We also would have liked the ability to move and resize text (or at least change the font) to bring some individuality and emphasis to our projects, plus it would have been nice to have the option for iCloud syncing over signing up for an account.

The bottom line. Notegraphy will beautify your notes, but it doesn’t give you enough say during the creative process.
