There are so many things that the iPad can do and so little time to tell you about them. Actually, that’s not true. There is plenty of time. That’s why we started this weekly column. Last week, we told you about a fantastic app that offers more than 150 tips on how to get the most out of your iPad.
This week, we go in-depth with the iPad’s native Notes app. You may not think much of the yellow-paper, limited-font note-taking application, but it is simple and efficient and has it where it counts.
You can sync your notes to multiple devices and share them with anyone. It only takes a few simple steps.
In order to set up Note syncing from your iPad, go to your Settings app and select the iCloud tab. Under iCloud, toggle the on/off switch to “On.” If you have not already created a me@icloud.com account, you will be asked to do so. It is very easy. You will just have to add a prefix to @iCloud.com. No password is necessary.
While you are in your Settings app, double-check to make sure that your email account note-syncing option is on. This will automatically sync your notes to your OSX Mail.app or a third-party mail service.
Tap the “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” tab and then select any or all email accounts that you would like to sync your notes with. When the account editing window pops up, toggle the switch to “On.”
If you have more than one email account with the Notes app sync selected, you can manually select one of them to be your default email. Tap the “Notes” tap and then select, “Default Account.” All email accounts that sync with your Notes app will be listed. Tap the one you would like to be your default.
This feature is very useful if you have a note on your iPad and don’t have the device with you, but do have access to a computer. For example, if you have synced your notes to your Gmail account, you can find the note you are looking for by searching for it in you mailbox from any Web browser.
Once you’ve turned on Notes-syncing from your iPad, you will also have to activate sharing on other devices and on your Mac. To sync your notes to another iOS device, follow the same procedure as with the iPad.
To sync your Notes to your Mac running OSX, first launch the Notes app on your computer. Then, select “Notes” from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen and select “Accounts.” In the accounts section you will be able to select which email accounts you want to share with your Notes app. To allow the computer to sync Notes from your iPad, log into your iCloud account using your Apple ID (not your @iCloud account). Once you are logged in, you will be able to sync notes from your OSX-based computer, your iPad, your iPhone and your iPod touch.
If you want to share your Notes with others, you can easily send them through email or text message. You can also print a note using AirPrint or copy an entire note and paste it to another document.
Now, your notes will be synced across all of your supported devices and you’ll never be stuck without them.
