Welcome to this week’s music column. PadGadget’s Sound Stage is where we bring you news and information on apps and accessories that we think musicians will love. Last week, we told you about Prolellerhead’s Thor Polysonic Synthesizer. If you are looking for a multi-use keyboard, MIDI compatible wave table synthesizer, you can have it all with Thor.
This week, we have a great app for music fans who love to sing along to their favorite pop songs. You don’t have to wait for karaoke night to get real-time lyrics to hundreds of songs with this lyric app.
The musiXmatch lyrics player is a karaoke style lyric app that displays the words to popular songs. Not only can you play music from within the app, while watching the music video related to it, but you can scan your iPad’s music library, and even capture songs from an external device.
To listen to music from your device’s library, tap on the menu icon and select “My Music” to see your albums. Pick an album and a song and, if the lyrics are available, they will show up in a line-by-line karaoke style display on the screen.
You can also select songs that include lyrics from the Popular song list or sing along to the top charts. Each song in the Popular and Charts section includes a music video and line-by-line lyrics.
If you know of a specific song or band that you’d like to hear, type it into the search bar to find it. Surprisingly, this app includes some fairly obscure music, although I had problems syncing the lyrics to some of them.
Even if the music you want to sing along to is not coming from your iPad at all, you can still find the lyrics. Tap the “Identify Song” button and the app will “listen” for the music. If the song is in the database, the title and artist, as well as the lyrics, will be displayed. Your karaoke options are practically limitless.
MusicXmatch lyrics player is free to download and comes with all of the features. However, it is ad supported. To remove the advertisements, you can pay $4.99 per year, or $3.99 for six months. If you think you’ll be using this app a lot, the ad removal is worth it since they will pop up between songs and you have to sit through them. If you only plan on using the app for fun and when you are alone or with just a couple of buddies, then I suggest skipping the in-app purchase since you still have access to all of the available features.
Pick it up in the App Store today and have karaoke night, every night of the week.
