Plex Media Server Update Brings Plex/Web to Masses

Plex for Mac iconPlex is easily one of our most-used apps, and with good reason — it works across iOS, Android, Mac, PC and now even the web itself. With the latest version of the free Plex Media Server, you can now enjoy your photos, video or music from just about anywhere.

Plex has announced the availability of Plex Media Server 0.9.7.3, a fairly innocuous-sounding update that finally unleashes the company’s new Plex/Web on any user who wants it.

In a nutshell, Plex/Web is the company’s web-based solution for viewing any content you are serving up via the Plex Media Server. This can include photos, music and video, and with the latest Server update, users can now even manage their entire Plex world right from the comfort of a web browser.

Formerly available to paid PlexPass members, Plex/Web takes advantage of the updated Plex Media Server’s ability to read and filter EXIF data in photos, filter videos by resolution and even force the transcoder to go idle once it gets ahead of your stream, thereby saving CPU and allowing multiple sessions to coexist peacefully.

While the Plex Media Server app for Mac, Windows or Linux will still be required to serve up your content to any compatible client, the good news is said content can now be managed right from a web browser using Plex/Web, where you can also conveniently kick back and watch your favorite movies or TV shows, listen to some tunes or bask in the glow of your photo collection from most any web browser.

Plex Media Server 0.9.7.3 can be updated right from an existing installation or downloaded direct from the Plex website, which makes a tasty, media-serving treat right before the holidays.
