PopCap Unveils New Plants vs. Zombies 2 for iPad and iPhone 5

Plants_vs._Zombies_2Last fall, PopCap promised the world that its popular castle defense game, Plants vs. Zombies would get a follow-up in late spring. The company went on to spend so much time creating its Facebook adaptation Plants vs. Zombies Adventures that they had to push back the launch of the much-anticipated sequel. Today, PopCap has announced that it will be able to meet it’s new deadline of “early summer” and will release Plants vs. Zombies 2 worldwide on July 18.

According to the company’s press release, PvZ 2 “continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future.”

The game will feature new worlds that include new levels, plants, and zombies. Plus, the company promises new ways to play will be released on an ongoing basis.” Although that vague statement is not further explained.

PvZ 2 will be free to play with upgrades and additional bonus items available through in-app purchases, an interesting change from the original game, which cost $9.99 when it first launched in April of 2010. Presumably, this is thanks to the acquisition of PopCap in 2011 by EA Games. Plants vs. Zombies HD is currently available for $0.99 with in-app purchases.

“It’s about time!” said Allen Murray, Senior Producer for Plants vs. Zombies 2. “We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game. We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we’re still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch.”

Get your zombie-eating plants ready for time travel action because this July, PvZ 2 will turn your backyard into a veritable chomping ground for the living dead.
