We’ve always wondered why no company aside from ShopRunner was crazy enough to attempt an Amazon Prime-style shipping service, but a new report claims Google may just be crazy enough to try.
TechCrunch is reporting that Google may be quietly planning a sneak attack on Amazon Prime, the e-tailer’s $79 per year service that offers free two-day shipping on most products sold by the company, along with thousands of free streaming movies and TV shows.
Google’s effort appears to be targeted strictly at the shipping side of that deal, with Google Shopping Express to offer “same-day delivery from brick-and-mortar stores like Target, Walmart, Walgreens and Safeway,” all at a cost that’s $10 to $15 cheaper than Amazon Prime.
Keep in mind that Google has yet to announce or even confirm the existence of such a service, which is rumored to be under the wing of the company’s e-commerce product manager, Tom Fallows. But the company certainly needs something like this to bring its flailing Google Wallet effort into the mainstream.
