Samsung Largest Supplier of iPad Displays in Q1 2014

iPad Air

With all of the back and forth we hear about Apple and Samsung in the news, you’d think that the two tech companies would not be willing to share the same air space, let alone work together. However, based on new information coming from ZDNet’s Korea affiliate, not only are they still business partners, but Apple appears to be relying more on Samsung than any other company for manufacturing of iPad display screens.

According to a report cited on ZDNet Asia, Samsung Display retook the top spot of suppliers for the 9.7-inch display panels that Apple uses for its iPad with Retina and iPad Air devices. Samsung shipped 5.2 million 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution displays, which accounted for 62 percent of all display panels shipped in the 9.7-inch size.

At the same time, the report also noted that LG Display, which is another major supplier for iPad display panels, dropped significantly from 61 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013 to 38 percent in the first quarter of 2014.

Since Apple and Samsung started suing each other for patent infringement, rumors have started that the two companies were sure to part ways. However, all signs point to a continued relationship between the two, no matter what happens in court.

It seems that Apple and Samsung have a lot more going on behind closed corporate doors that we are able to understand. While it may seem obvious to the rest of us that the two have a tumultuous relationship that should have ended years ago, the two gadget makers evidentially need each other.
