What goes better with science fiction than witty banter? It’s like mixing chocolate and peanut butter: two great tastes that go great together. Fans of the clever quips between Princess Leia and Han Solo will enjoy the humor of Sci-fi Heroes as they blast away enemies with laser pistols and fighting tigers.
Players start with Sarge the warrior and Nightingale the healbot. Head into the first battlefield and start fighting. Once you’ve found enough coins to unlock new characters, you can build a team of four and fight to the bitter end against mechanical sci-fi enemies.
This is a basic team-up shooter game. Players control four characters at a time and fight off waves of enemies until the battle is won or lost. The healbot will keep you from dying, but he can’t work miracles, so be careful out there.
Nightingale heals, the Sarge shoots, and Sam Vargas is adept at hand-to-hand combat because of his super-powered exo-suit. Each character has his or her own type of offense and defense. Players can create the ultimate team with the right combination of characters.
Players loot the battlefield for weapons, armor and power boosts. Weapons and armor can be upgraded and sold if you have something you don’t need. Selling unwanted items is a great way to earn more coins. You will need them in order to train your skills.
Each character has a talent tree where they train a certain type of skill. For example, you can either train Sam Vargas in defensive skills or offensive skills. Training costs money. It is the biggest expense of the game, other than the fancy items that aren’t necessary to play the game.
It costs fuel to land on each battlefield. Fuel regenerates after a few minutes, but only one at a time. Players will run out of fuel after nine levels and have to either wait to regenerate enough fuel to unlock the next level, or buy more fuel through an in-app purchase.
You can download this game for free, but it doesn’t take long before you are forced into in-app purchases in order to keep playing. I never made it out of the first world because I didn’t have enough fuel, nor was I able to afford to train my characters enough to successfully kill everyone on the battlefield in the last three levels.
One good thing about this game is you can replay levels for coins and experience. So, if you do find yourself unable to beat the bad guys on level eight, you can replay levels one through seven, earn coins to upgrade your weapons and increase your team’s experience points.
The developers of this game definitely have a sense of humor. The dialog between characters is witty and clever. Your team will take jabs at each other and tease each other at the beginning of each level. Saving the universe is all good clean fun for these Sci-Fi Heroes.
What I liked: The best part about this game is the clever witticisms that the characters have. It is light hearted and fun.
What I didn’t like: The in-app purchase mechanism is pretty heavy from the start. You can only get to about level 10 before you are at the point where you either have to wait until you regenerate fuel or buy more with real cash.
To buy or not to buy: Even though the in-app purchases are almost a necessity from the beginning, there are ways to continue playing the game without having to spend real cash. Because you can replay levels without it costing anything, I recommend this game. It is the one saving grace that makes the game worth downloading.
