In an interesting update to the most popular video-calling app, Skype just added HD calling, but only for owners of the fourth-generation iPad. Unfortunately, all prior Apple tablets are not up to par for the image quality upgrade.
The fourth-generation iPad launched in October of 2012. The biggest changes to the tablet included a faster processor chip, 4G LTE compatibility, and a Lightning dock connector. One change that has gone mostly unnoticed was the improvements to the front-facing camera. Unlike it’s predecessor, the iPad 4 has an HD camera.
Until today, Skype users were unable to take advantage of the better grade of front facing camera. (Honestly, knowing that some companies aren’t taking advantage of the fourth-generation iPad’s features makes me feel better about not upgrading from my third-generation tablet.) However, with version 4.10, owners of Apple’s most current model of iPad can finally make HD-quality calls.
Similar to FaceTime, Skype customers can make free video calls to other users. You can send voice messages, chats, and photos using the service. What makes Skype an important asset to an iOS user’s app list is that you don’t have to be on iOS to use Skype. The app is compatible with Mac, PC, Android, and even some television sets. If your brother refuses to use Apple products in his house, you can still video chat with him on Skype. The video service is free and only requires an account sign up.
Skype us free to download and version 4.10 is available in the App Store today. Even if you don’t have a fourth generation iPad, be sure to download the update for the added improvements to call quality and stability.
