Steelcase’s New ‘Gesture’ Chair Designed for iPad and iPhone Users

Gesture 2The world is changing. Technology is changing. The way we sit has been drastically altered because of it. When you are at your desk, do you sit upright with your arms at a 45-degree angle at all times? Maybe while you are typing on your computer you do. But, what about when you are texting, checking something on your iPad, or are deeply engrossed in a lengthy blog post? Chances are, you are not practicing good posture techniques. This can lead to back and neck pain. Steelcase has come up with a solution.

Inspired by the movement of the human body while interacting with smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops, Steelcase has designed the “Gesture,” which supports our interactions with today’s technologies; all of them.

Gesture 3The chair maker conducted a global posture study in 11 countries and watched 2,000 people with a variety of postures. The results uncovered nine new postures as a result of new technologies. These new postures could have an adverse affect on long-term sitters if not properly addressed.

Here is where the Gesture comes in. The specially designed chair addresses three posture issues, the core interface, the limb interface, and the seat interface. Plus, the chair addresses the “user interface,” which takes into account different body types and sitting preferences.

Gesture 1As of today, the Gesture is ready to ship. It comes in 13 different colors, ranging from classic black to sky blue. You can customize your chair with different frames and roll casters. The price starts at $979 and goes up a couple hundred bucks depending on the options you choose. Because each chair is made to order, delivery time is 14 weeks. So, you won’t be getting this bad boy for Christmas. Visit the company’s website for more information.
