Apple is supposedly working on a 12.9-inch iPad model. Rumors have been bubbling up recently that the larger sized tablet will be ready sometime in early 2015, will sport the, slightly better, A8X processor chip, and might even come with 2GB of RAM. Today’s rumor is that Samsung will be on deck to supply the display screens for the so-called “iPad Pro.”
According to Korea-based news site inews24, Samsung will supply Apple with display panels for both the second-generation iPad Air and the iPad Pro. Samsung will supposedly begin manufacturing the panels, which are said to feature IPS technology, in the coming months.
It is no surprise that Apple is working with Samsung on display panels. The latter was the top iPad display supplier in the first quarter of 2014. Clearly Samsung has a leg up on the competition when it comes to meeting the quality demands and production deadlines that Apple requires of suppliers.
It is still unclear whether the iPad Pro even exists. Normally around this time, we would see leaked photos of the supposed shell or screen. However, we haven’t seen such evidence since back in May.
Public sentiment also doesn’t seem to be pushing for the larger screened tablet. Social media seems to be asking why Apple would make such a device. If Apple is trying to tap into a market that wants a 13-inch tablet, the device has to come with more than 1GB of RAM and would need to act more like a laptop than a tablet. At the same time, it would need to be significantly cheaper than a MacBook Air, which would be difficult considering the demands consumers have for its technical specs.
Since we are still hearing rumors that the iPad Pro exists, it is possible, but I’m not convinced just yet.
