It is hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner and the New Year is only a week away. This year has been a great year for the iPad, not just with the amazing new iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina, but the App Store has seen some fantastic submissions. Each week, Apple spotlights a few of the cream of the crop for their extra special content, design, and iOS features. Last week, Apple spotlighted the sequel to the 2012 Game of the Year. The Room Two is just as good as its predecessor and over with just as fast.
This week, the award goes to an indie game that got its footing from Kickstarter. République is a stealth game that really shows off what the iPad can do.
Whenever I hear someone say that the iPad isn’t any good for console games, I shake my head. If game developers would spend a little time redesigning their programs for iOS, we’d see that the iPad can handle the work. République is one of those apps that proves that console quality gaming is capable in mobile form.
Players take control of the security cameras in a compound where a young girl is being held. Her goal is to escape before being “recalibrated” and your job is to help her.
Using the security cameras, jump from room to room to get an advanced view of the path ahead. When everything is clear, send Hope to the next hiding spot. If Hope is seen, a guard will track her down. You can help her get away by equipping her with pepper spray, but if she has none, its back to the containment cell. Lucky for her, you can unlock most doors in the compound, so she doesn’t have to stay locked up for long.
In addition to helping Hope escape, players collect newspapers, check emails, and listen to phone messages that explain the reason she is in trouble and what has happened in this oppressive environment.
This game is the first of five episodes. Once you’ve downloaded Episode one, you can purchase a season pass for the rest of the episodes for $14.99, which is about five dollars off the total price. République is available for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch for $4.99. Download it in the App Store today.
